== The event ==The 1978 Embassy World Snooker Championship took place at the Crucible Theatre, Sheffield between the 17 and 29 April 1978.

Notable Moments

This was the first championship to have daily BBC coverage, as late night highlights, starting on April 17.

Defending champion John Spencer became the first player to suffer the so-called Crucible Curse, when he lost 8-13 to Perrie Mans in the first round.

Ray Reardon became the oldest World Champion at the age of 45 years and 6 months, while Fred Davis became the oldest semi-finalist in the championship at the age of 64 years and 8 months, losing 18-16 to Perrie Mans.

Fred's brother, Joe Davis, attended his semi-final match with Mans, which was so gripping that he collapsed and fell ill. He died two months later.

John Williams refereed the final.
